FAQs
The following questions are based on common enquiries from homeowners and installers about the SG48100P. Contact us directly if your question is not covered here.
Which inverter brands are listed as compatible with this battery?
The manufacturer lists the following inverter brands as compatible: Growatt, Sol-Ark, Victron Energy, SMA, Deye, Luxpower, Solis, Schneider, Phocos, MPP Solar, SMK, and SunGoldPower. Communication is via CAN, RS485, or RS232 protocols, selectable from the battery LCD menu.
For Victron installations: use the CAN port with a CANBUS B cable. Some printed versions of the user manual contain an incorrect pin diagram for the CAN port — the wiring diagram on the physical battery face plate is correct.
Always verify compatibility with your specific inverter model and firmware version before purchasing. Contact us with your inverter model number and we will advise on the correct protocol and settings.
What is included in the box?
Each SG48100P includes the following items as listed in the manufacturer packing list:
- SG48100P battery pack
- Positive and negative output cables (25mm², 0.5m, copper lugs at both ends)
- Battery-inverter cables
- RS485 cascade communication line (0.5m, RJ45)
- RS232 USB cable (1.2m) for PC monitoring
- Hanging ear screws (M6 x 16mm) for rack mounting
- Dry contact terminal
- User manual and product certificate
A 19-inch server rack or battery cabinet is sold separately. A grounding cable must be supplied by the installer.
How heavy is the battery and how many people are needed to install it?
The SG48100P weighs 93 lbs (approximately 43 kg). Two people are recommended for installation. Retractable handles on both sides of the unit assist with positioning it in a rack enclosure. The unit must be installed horizontally — vertical or inverted installation is not permitted by the manufacturer and will void the warranty.
What inverter settings does this battery require?
The SG48100P uses a lower recommended charge voltage than the default setting on many inverters. Set your inverter as follows:
- Recommended charge voltage: 54.5V
- Charging limited voltage (maximum): 57.6V — do not exceed this value
- Discharge cutoff voltage: 43.2V
- Battery type: LiFePO4 or Li
- Communication protocol: set to match the protocol selected on the battery LCD
Setting the inverter charge voltage above 57.6V will trigger the battery overvoltage protection and stop charging. Contact us with your inverter make and model and we will provide the correct settings for your configuration.
Does this battery charge in cold weather?
The SG48100P can discharge at temperatures as low as -4 degrees F (-20 degrees C). The BMS stops accepting charge current when cell temperature falls below 32 degrees F (0 degrees C). If your installation is in a location that regularly reaches below-freezing temperatures and charging is required during those periods, consider the SGH48100T self-heating variant, which includes internal heaters designed to bring cell temperature to a safe charging range before charge current is allowed to flow.
Can I add more batteries to my system after the initial installation?
Yes. Up to 32 SG48100P units can be connected in parallel. Before connecting additional units, all batteries must be at the same state of charge. Turn off the inverter and all batteries before making any new parallel connections. Once connections are made, power the master unit first, then the slave units.
Each unit must be assigned a unique address using the 6-bit DIP switch on the front panel. The master unit holds address 1. All units in a parallel bank must be the same model — SG48100P only. Do not mix with other battery models or brands.
How much storage capacity do I need for home backup power?
Storage requirements depend on which appliances you need to run, for how long, and whether solar recharging is available. The figures below are illustrative examples — actual performance will vary based on your specific loads, usage habits, and ambient conditions.
- 1 unit (5.12 kWh): may support essential loads such as a refrigerator, router, and lighting for a period of hours to one day
- 2 units (10.24 kWh): may extend essential load support to one to two days
- 4 units (20.48 kWh): may support a broader range of home loads for several days depending on usage
- 6 units (30.72 kWh): may support extended backup with solar recharging during daylight
Contact us with your average daily kWh usage and your solar array size and we will help you estimate how many units may meet your needs.
What does the BMS do when it detects a fault?
The BMS monitors individual cells continuously. When it detects a condition outside safe operating parameters — such as overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, overtemperature, or short circuit — it stops charging or discharging as required and displays the fault on the front LCD. The red ALM indicator on the front panel lights up during an active fault or protection event. The buzzer also activates: one short beep per second during a fault, one short beep every two seconds during a protection event, and one short beep every three seconds during an alarm condition.
In many cases the BMS will resume normal operation once the triggering condition resolves. If a fault persists, the fault record in the LCD menu identifies the specific fault type. Contact technical support if restarting the unit does not resolve the issue.
How do I set the DIP switches for a parallel installation?
Each battery in a parallel bank must have a unique address set using the 6-bit DIP switch on the front panel. The first battery (master) is set to address 1: switch position 1 ON, all other positions OFF. Each subsequent battery is set to the next address in sequence. The master unit must be connected to the inverter for communication.
The full DIP switch address table is in Section 9.5 of the user manual. Do not assign the same address to two units in the same bank — duplicate addresses will cause communication conflicts.
Can I connect this battery with a different brand or model of battery?
No. The manufacturer specifies that different battery types must not be connected in series or parallel with the SG48100P. All units in a parallel bank must be the same model. Connecting incompatible battery types or models can cause BMS communication failures, unbalanced charging, and may create a safety hazard.
Are the UL certifications accepted for permitted residential installations?
The SG48100P carries UL1973 and UL9540A certifications. These certifications are commonly required by US building departments, fire authorities, and insurance providers for permitted battery storage installations. Requirements vary by jurisdiction — confirm the specific requirements with your local building department or licensed electrician before purchasing. Certification documentation is available on request.
Does this battery include a smartphone monitoring app?
The SG48100P does not include a built-in Wi-Fi module or dedicated smartphone app. Battery status is displayed on the front-panel LCD. When the battery is connected to a compatible inverter via CAN or RS485, battery data — including state of charge, voltage, and current — may be visible through the inverter manufacturer's monitoring app, such as Growatt ShinePhone or Victron VRM. The included RS232 USB cable allows connecting to a PC for detailed BMS monitoring and parameter access using compatible software.
What does the 10-year warranty cover?
The 10-year warranty covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship under normal operating conditions, including BMS failure caused by manufacturing defects and cell capacity falling below 80% of rated capacity within the warranty period.
The warranty does not cover: physical damage from improper installation or handling, operation outside of the specified temperature or voltage ranges, exposure to water or moisture, unauthorized disassembly or modification of the battery, damage caused by reverse polarity connection, or use with battery types other than SG48100P units. The warranty applies to the original purchaser only and is not transferable. Proof of original purchase is required for any warranty claim.
