Our experts are here to help you find the lithium battery for your needs.

The Dakota Lithium Ultra Fast 12V 50A Waterproof LiFePO4 Onboard Battery Charger is designed to charge large 12-volt lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery banks efficiently while protecting the long-term health of the cells. Rated at 50 amps of continuous output at 14.4 volts, it is intended for use with 12V lithium batteries of 100 amp hours (Ah) or more.

It is the high-output option in the Dakota Lithium charger lineup and is suited to users running large battery banks who need to reduce charging time between uses.

Who this charger is for: Anglers running large trolling motor batteries, boaters with onboard house banks, RV owners with 100Ah or larger lithium systems, and off-grid users with high-capacity energy storage who want a permanent, waterproof onboard charging solution.

Charging speed reference: Divide your battery's amp-hour rating by 50 to estimate charge time. A 135Ah battery charges in approximately 2.7 hours. A 320Ah battery charges in approximately 6.4 hours. A 560Ah battery charges in approximately 11 hours.

Why LiFePO4-specific charging matters: Standard lead-acid and SLA chargers use a voltage profile that is not optimized for lithium iron phosphate chemistry. Using an incompatible charger on LiFePO4 batteries reduces usable capacity and shortens cycle life over time. This charger outputs the 14.4V charge profile recommended by Dakota Lithium for their batteries.

Onboard installation: This unit is designed for permanent onboard installation. The IP67 waterproof rating means it can be mounted in engine compartments, under gunwales, or in other locations exposed to water spray, rain, and humidity. The aluminum housing acts as a passive heat sink to manage thermal load during extended charge cycles.

Connection method: Charging is done through an Anderson SB50 plug. Ring terminals attach permanently to the battery cables. The charger plugs in when needed and unplugs when charging is complete. A red indicator light confirms active charging. The light turns green when the battery is fully charged.

Smart BMS communication: If a Dakota Lithium battery's built-in Battery Management System (BMS) has shut the battery down due to a short circuit or excessive amp draw, connecting this charger will send a restart signal to the BMS and bring the battery back online.

Compatibility note: This charger is not recommended for batteries under 100Ah. At 50 amps, the charge rate would exceed a safe threshold for smaller batteries and accelerates cell degradation. It is also not compatible with lead-acid, AGM, gel, or SLA batteries.

Lifespan guidance from Dakota Lithium testing: Laboratory testing found that the longest battery lifespan was achieved at a charge rate of 0.3C or lower, meaning the charger's amp rating should ideally be one-third or less of the battery's Ah rating. For this reason, the 50A charger is ideally paired with batteries of 150Ah and above for everyday use. LiFePO4 batteries can be safely charged at up to 1C, but Dakota Lithium notes that charging at that rate consistently reduces overall cycle life compared to slower rates.

The charger accepts universal AC input (100–240V, 50/60Hz), making it compatible with standard North American outlets and international power sources. A free Anderson plug wiring kit with ring terminals is included.

Recommended battery pairings: DL+ 12V 135Ah, DL+ 12V 320Ah, DL+ 12V 560Ah.

FAQs

What batteries is this charger compatible with?

This charger is designed for 12V lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries with a capacity of 100 amp hours (Ah) or more. It is calibrated for Dakota Lithium LiFePO4 batteries but will work with any 12V LiFePO4 battery from other manufacturers, as long as the battery is rated at 100Ah or higher and can accept a 50-amp charge rate. It is not compatible with lead-acid, AGM, gel, or SLA batteries. Using it on those battery types can cause damage.

Can I use this charger on a battery smaller than 100Ah?

Dakota Lithium does not recommend using this charger on batteries under 100Ah. At 50 amps, the charge rate would be too high relative to the battery's capacity, which accelerates cell wear and reduces overall cycle life. For smaller batteries, Dakota Lithium offers 3A, 10A, and 20A charger models that are more appropriate.

How long will it take to charge my battery?

Divide your battery's amp-hour (Ah) rating by 50 to get an approximate charge time in hours. A 135Ah battery takes approximately 2.7 hours. A 320Ah battery takes approximately 6.4 hours. A 560Ah battery takes approximately 11.2 hours. These are estimates; actual times vary depending on the battery's starting state of charge and temperature.

Will charging at 50A shorten my battery's lifespan?

Dakota Lithium's laboratory testing found that the longest battery lifespan occurs at a charge rate of 0.3C or lower, meaning the charger's amp rating should ideally be one-third or less of the battery's Ah capacity. For a 135Ah battery that is approximately 45A, so this charger is close to the optimal range for that size. LiFePO4 batteries can be safely charged at up to 1C (a full charge in one hour), but doing so consistently will reduce total cycle count over time. For most users, a charge time of 3 to 10 hours provides a practical balance of speed and longevity.

Why does a LiFePO4 battery need its own specific charger?

LiFePO4 batteries require a charge voltage of 14.4V for a standard 12V configuration. Many lead-acid chargers charge to a different voltage and use algorithms designed for a different chemistry. Using a lead-acid charger on a LiFePO4 battery may undercharge or overcharge the cells over time, reducing capacity and shortening the battery's lifespan. This charger outputs the 14.4V profile Dakota Lithium recommends.

What does the Smart BMS restart function do?

Dakota Lithium batteries include a Battery Management System (BMS) that protects cells from overcharging, over-discharging, short circuits, and excessive current draw. If the BMS shuts the battery down as a protective measure, the battery may appear completely unresponsive. Connecting this charger sends a low-level signal to the BMS that initiates a restart sequence, bringing the battery back online without requiring a separate reset tool.

Is this charger truly waterproof?

This charger carries an IP67 rating, which means it is fully dust-tight and protected against water immersion to a depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. It can handle rain, spray, splash, and the wet conditions common in marine and outdoor environments. It is designed for permanent onboard installation in those conditions. Terminals and connections should still be kept as clean and dry as practical to prevent corrosion over time.

Can I leave this charger connected to my battery after it is fully charged?

The charger stops delivering current when the battery reaches full charge and the indicator turns green. Dakota Lithium recommends disconnecting the charger when charging is complete rather than leaving it connected indefinitely. The Anderson plug makes this straightforward: plug in to charge, unplug when done.

Can I charge my battery in cold weather?

Charging LiFePO4 batteries below 32°F (0°C) is not recommended unless the battery includes an internal heating system. Charging a very cold lithium cell can damage the anode material and reduce capacity over time. Dakota Lithium offers batteries with Internal Even-Heat Technology, such as the DL+ 12V 135Ah and DL+ 12V 320Ah, that allow for safe cold-weather charging. If your battery does not have internal heating, bring it above freezing before connecting the charger.

Does this charger work with international outlets?

Yes. The charger accepts 100–240V AC input at 50 or 60Hz, which covers the standard household current used in North America, Europe, Australia, and most other regions. A plug adapter for different outlet formats may be needed, but no voltage converter is required.

What is included in the box?

The charger ships with the charging unit (Anderson SB50 plug pre-installed) and a free Anderson plug wiring kit that includes ring terminals. The ring terminals are attached permanently to your battery cables. The charger then connects and disconnects via the Anderson plug each time you charge.

How do I know when my battery is fully charged?

The charger has a two-color LED indicator. When actively charging, the light is red. When the battery reaches full charge, the light switches to green. At that point the charger can be disconnected.

Is this charger compatible with non-Dakota Lithium LiFePO4 batteries?

Yes, as long as the battery is a 12V lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) type with a capacity of 100Ah or more and can accept a 50-amp charge input. The 14.4V output follows the standard LiFePO4 charge profile used by most LFP battery manufacturers. Always verify your battery manufacturer's recommended charge voltage before using any third-party charger.

What charger size does Dakota Lithium recommend for longest battery lifespan?

Dakota Lithium's testing found the optimal charge rate for maximum cycle life is 0.3C or lower, meaning the charger's amp rating should be one-third or less of the battery's Ah capacity. For a 135Ah battery, that would be a 45A charger or smaller. This 50A charger is close to that threshold for a 135Ah battery and falls well within it for 320Ah and larger banks. For users whose priority is maximum cycle life over a 135Ah battery, the 20A model would be a more conservative option.
