The Dakota Lithium DL+ 12V 135Ah is a dual-purpose Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery designed to start engines and run deep-cycle electronics from a single unit. It fits a standard Group 24 battery case and is a direct drop-in replacement for most Group 24 and Group 34 lead-acid or AGM batteries.

Three things separate this battery from a standard AGM or lead-acid replacement:

  • Built-in cold-weather charging. An internal heating element automatically warms the cells before charging when temperatures drop below 32°F, allowing safe charging down to -4°F per manufacturer specifications. Standard lithium batteries cannot be safely charged below freezing.
  • Long cycle life. Rated by the manufacturer for up to 5,000 charge cycles to 80% capacity under recommended conditions compared to approximately 300–500 cycles for a typical AGM battery of the same size.
  • Dual-purpose engine start and deep cycle. Provides 1,000 CCA for cranking gasoline engines and 135Ah of sustained capacity for running electronics, trolling motors, and accessories without needing two separate batteries.

At 27.2 lbs, it is approximately 65% lighter than a comparable lead-acid battery, per manufacturer data. Includes an active Battery Management System (BMS) that handles cell balancing, overcharge protection, over-discharge protection, and short-circuit protection automatically.

Backed by an 11-year pro-rated manufacturer defect warranty. Meets ABYC marine standards and Mercury Outboard Motors lithium starter battery requirements. Certifications include UL1642, IEC62133, and UN 38.3.

In most cases, yes. It matches Group 24 dimensions and includes a terminal adapter kit for both automotive and marine connections. Two things to check first: (1) your charger should be LiFePO4-compatible set to 14.4V a standard lead-acid charger will only charge to about 80% capacity; (2) if charging via alternator, output must be 150A or less per battery.

The DL+ 135Ah is manufacturer-rated for up to 5,000 charge cycles to 80% capacity under recommended conditions. A typical AGM battery is rated for 300–500 cycles. Actual lifespan depends on depth of discharge, charging practices, and operating temperatures. Using a LiFePO4-compatible charger and keeping charge rates at 70A or below helps maximize cycle life.

A LiFePO4-compatible charger set to 14.4V. Dakota Lithium recommends a 12V 10A or 12V 20A unit (sold separately). Any charger with a LiFePO4 or lithium mode works correctly. Do not use chargers with desulfation or equalization modes these can damage LiFePO4 cells. For solar, set your charge controller to the LiFePO4 profile at 14.4V.

Yes. It is designed for deep-cycle use. For 24V trolling motor systems, connect two units in series. For 36V, connect three. The flat voltage discharge curve means consistent motor speed throughout the discharge cycle, unlike lead-acid batteries that gradually lose thrust as they deplete.

According to Dakota Lithium, the DL+ 12V 135Ah meets Mercury Motors requirements for lithium starter batteries. For other outboard brands, check your engine manufacturer's documentation not all outboard manufacturers have approved lithium starter batteries for their engines.

No watering, equalizing, or desulfation required. The BMS handles cell balancing automatically. For long-term storage, keep the battery at roughly 50% charge in a temperature-controlled space and top it up every 3–6 months. Do not store it fully discharged.
